Challenge
1. Habitate for Humanity has approached your team to design a single story house for a local family. There are two young children in the family.
You are to research construction techniques dealing with framing and then design and build a house to accommodate a family of four. Remember that this is to be a basic 3 bedroom house without extra bells and whistles. You will be closing in the walls only on front side of the house.
2. You have been approached by a marketing firm to create a public service announcement for an issue that faces teen-agers everyday.
You are to brainstorm the many issues that face teen-agers daily keeping in mind it must be appropriate for television and should be aimed at pre-teens as well. You are to create a commercial that is 30 – 45 seconds in length. That includes music and titles.
3. Pixar Studios has approached your animation company to create two 30 second long Pivot stickman animations to appear at the beginning and end of their latest animated feature.
You are to create 2 clips (one action and one of a sport) including backgrounds created using Paint as well as at least two additional Pivot actors/figures.
4. You have won an on-line contest that gives you and a friend $5000 to spend on the trip of a life time. The catch is the trip must be to see 5 concerts, sports events, theme parks, etc. and that you must stay within North America. If you have any other ideas, your teacher must approve them.
You are to brainstorm ideas of things that you would like to do together: concerts, sports events, theme parks, etc. and then start researching things such as airline costs, accommodations, meals, etc. that you will incur during this trip. You are to compile all of the information into a PowerPoint presentation with a separate slide for each event.
5. You have been asked by the HGTV show Restaurant Makeover to help them on their latest project to re-design a downtown family restaurant and turn it into a trendy restaurant to fit in with the existing businesses in an area that is experiencing a renaissance.
You are to start by research restaurant floor plans/designs on the internet. Then you are to design a before and after floor plan for the restaurant. You are also to come up with a new name, logo, and slogan. The last item is to create a new menu based on a theme of your choice: ethnic, seafood, steak, etc.
6. Disney has approached you to create a new theme park.
You are to research the parks that Disney already has and brainstorm ideas for themes that might fit. Once you have a theme and name, you are to create five ride names and then set about to design and build one of the rides.


7. MHS has approached your website design company to re-design their site to make it more user-friendly and include all the links they currently have as well as adding any missing links.
You are to check out websites from other schools in the province and compare them to ours. Are they better or worse? Then you are to begin the process of re-designing using Macromedia Dream Weaver. There is a binder on the shelf that will provide you with help to complete this task.
8. The local Boys & Girls Club has contacted your interior design firm to help them with a re-design of their facility.
You are to research boy’s and girl’s club to check the services that they offer and then set about designing a floor plan for the facility. You are to use Google SketchUp to design the exterior of the building and then use it to design the interior.
9. You have been contacted by a marketing firm to produce a public service announcement for a topic that affects pre-teens and teens that is to appear on MuchMusic.
Using Macromedia Flash, you are to design a commercial clip of 30 seconds to meet the requirements of the customer. There is binder on the shelf which will help you get going in Flash.
10. You have long wanted to set up your own business and know have an opportunity. You and a friend are going to design jewelry to sell at the local farmer’s market.
You are going to have to research the history of jewelry as well as complete some market research to make sure that you are going to be competitive with regards to price. Then you are to create a bracelet, necklace, and earrings/anklet.
11. MHS is in need of an editor/publisher for a weekly newsletter.
You are faced with the challenge of creating a template for the newsletter using Word which will be the platform for the weekly publication and then will have to create a draft version making sure to include as much recent events in it as possible.
12. You have been asked by your older sister and her husband-to-be to create a wedding planner.
You are to brainstorm every aspect of a wedding (family dinner, wedding, reception and honeymoon) and then create a PowerPoint presentation cover these aspects which will include prices for the items.
13. Moncton High School’s musical production is creating a DVD.
Using Photoshop, you are to create a DVD cover.
14. Moncton High School’s football team just finished a undefeated season with a championship and want to capitalize on that by creating a DVD of all the great moments.
Using Photoshop, you are to create a DVD cover.
15. You have been hired by the district to create a multi-media presentation featuring Moncton High School before it undergoes renovations.
You are to use Windows Movie Maker and create a 3 minute presentation including appropriate music.
16. You have been hired by Steven Speilberg to create a 30 second animation for an upcoming film.
You are to create a script and storyboard for the film. This includes writing a script and storyboard and then creating the animation using ALICE. Go on YouTube and watch videos dealing with how to use ALICE.
17. Introductory Module – includes completion of Passport To Safety, WHMIS, Measurement and Google SketchUp.

18. Careers Module – complete research on three careers that require some post-secondary education (university, community college, trade school, etc.) and answer questions pertaining to each career.
